If your teeth are damaged and cause you excessive pain, dentures can greatly improve your quality of life. Although your dentist will protect your natural teeth as much as possible, wearing dentures is usually a relief for dental patients. If you and your dentist decide to wear dentures, consider the following important considerations to best care for your dentures.

1. Use a toothbrush designed for dentures

Although soft-bristled toothbrushes are generally safe for dentures, it is a smart idea to use a toothbrush designed for dentures to clean dentures in the best way. You can buy denture toothbrushes at most pharmacies. If you have trouble making dentures, your dentist will help you get the denture care tools you need.

2. Don’t leave dentures overnight

You should remove and clean your dentures every day. Unless the dentist advises you of your particular situation, don’t miss a day of dentures or spend the night in your mouth. The exception may be that your dentures are brand new. However, once your mouth is adjusted, be sure to take them out before going to bed.

3. Remove your dentures before cleaning your mouth

Many people who wear dentures mistakenly believe that they do not need to brush the inside of their mouths. Instead, they only focus on cleaning after the denture is removed. However, you still need to clean your gums, tongue, cheek area and upper jaw. Bacteria and food residues can accumulate in the mouth and still need to be cleaned thoroughly.

Use a soft toothbrush to clean your mouth. Make sure that all remaining denture adhesive is removed. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash, and massage your gums with a damp towel if you feel you need it. If you have partial dentures, be sure to brush and floss your teeth twice a day.

4. Do not use denture cleaner in your mouth

Although simply cleaning the dentures while they are still in the mouth seems to save time and effort, be sure to take them out for cleaning. If you are pressed for time, wait and clean them up appropriately. Denture cleaner is specially formulated to safely clean dentures outside the oral cavity.

5. Be sure to thoroughly rinse your dentures

One of the reasons that dentures should not be cleaned in the mouth is that the specially formulated denture cleaner is very effective. They usually contain irritating chemicals, and if you swallow them, they can cause vomiting and illness. Before you put the dentures back in your mouth, rinse them thoroughly every time you clean them.

6. Don’t let your dentures hang out

When you remove the dentures, carefully put the dentures in the liquid. The liquid you usually want to use is a denture cleanser. If you do not have dentures on your hands, you need to remove the dentures and soak them in warm water. This seems to go against people’s intuition because many people think it is beneficial to dry them, but if they are allowed to dry, they may become deformed.

7. Do Not Wear Ill-Fitting Dentures

If your dentures are loose and do not fit your mouth at all, go to the dentist as soon as possible. The bones in the mouth and gums will change over time, so dentures may change over time. Ignoring inappropriate dentures can cause damage to your dentures and your mouth. You may experience pain, burning sensation, and other aches.

8. Don’t skip your regular check

Some people mistakenly believe that dentures are free cards that they can get out of dental checkups. However, people who wear dentures need to see the dentist regularly like everyone else. Your dentist will check your mouth to make sure everything is normal. Bring your dentures too. Your dentist will check them for any damage and provide professional cleaning.
